Former President Bill Clinton, recalling the sex scandal that led to his impeachment in 1998, says in a new documentary that his out-of-wedlock relationship with Monica S. Lewinsky was a way "to manage anxiety â?.
The documentary, released on Hulu on Friday, focuses on Hillary Clinton's life, her marriage to Bill, and the unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2016.
Clinton was asked by director Nanette Burstein why she got engaged to Lewinsky, who was a practitioner at the White House at the time, and whether she considered the risks.
"No one sits down and says to himself, 'I think I'll take a risk. It's bad for my family, country and the people who work with me. Everyone's life is under pressure, frustrated, afraid of something, things I've done to manage anxiety for years, '' he replied.
Clinton initially denied having sex with Lewinsky during a lawsuit filed against him for sexual harassment by Paula Corbin Jones, a former Arkansas employee. She claimed that Clinton had approached her and proposed to move to a hotel room in 1991, when he was governor.
Lewinsky was an intern for Jennifer Palmier, a special assistant to the White House chief of staff and later director of communications for the 2016 Clinton presidential campaign. Evelyn Lieberman, vice. the chief of staff at the time expressed concerns about Lewinsky's presence in Clinton's life.
"I didn't think anything of it, of course, because who would think Bill Clinton could be so stupid?" - said Palmieri.
Mrs Clinton publicly stood by her partner when the allegations first surfaced, including during an interview with Matt Lauer on the Today show.
