Is there a better way to survive a pandemic than on a beach in Hawaii?

For anyone who finds this idea just a dream, Hawaii is offering free round-trip tickets to Oahu for those who want to live and work there while contributing to the state economy.

The state launched the temporary residence program, known as "Movers and Shakas," in collaboration with schools and businesses, and accepts the first group of applicants by December 15th.

"Movers and Jokes is a small step towards economic recovery and diversification of our economy," Jason Higa, the group's founder, told CNN. "The pandemic has normalized distance work for the foreseeable future, so we believe this situation presents an opportunity for locals to return home and for overseas professionals to experience Hawaii, not as tourists, but as contributing members of our community. ".

50 people will be selected for the first group, while subsequent applicants will be accepted repeatedly. To apply, you must be a remote worker and at least 18 years old. Participants must relocate within one month of selection and are required to spend at least 30 consecutive days in Hawaii. Those admitted to the program are required to engage a few hours each week in a nonprofit organization where they can use their knowledge and skills.

Hawaii has currently the lowest per capita rate of Covid infections in the country, making it also one of the safest places to live and work. So far, Hawaii has reported over 18,000 cases of coronavirus and more than 200 people have died.
