With falling births and people fleeing, the population of Albania is continuing to shrink dramatically. INSTAT data for the first quarter show that popula- tion increase was at least in the last five quarters, being close to zero.

The number of births for the first quarter of 2019 results to 5,986, marking a decrease of 10.1% compared to the first quarter 2018. The number of deaths for the first quarter of 2019 results to 5,949, marking a decrease of 5,7%, compared with the first quarter 2018.

During the first trimester 2019, the number of births exceeds 37 deaths. In the same quarter of the previous year, the population supplement was about 400 people.

In the first quarter of 2019, natural populations of the population in the 12 qarks of Albania marked the highest value in Tirana, where the number of births exceeds 562 deaths.

In the first quarter of 2019, natural supplements record negative values in eight counties. The lowest value is recorded in the district of Korça, where the number of deaths exceeds the number of births.

The highest number of births for the first quarter of 2019 is recorded in the Tirana district, with 1,985 births, which decreased by 9.4% compared to the first quarter of 2018. The lowest number of births for the quarter the first 2019 is recorded in the Gjirokastra region, with 97 births, reflecting a 21.8% decline compared to the first quarter 2018.

Of the 12 districts in the country, nine of them suffered a decline in the number of births in the first quarter of 2019 compared to the first quarter of 2018. The largest drops in birth rates during this period were recorded in the Gjirokastra district on 21, 8% and the district of Shkodra with 19.4%. An increase in percentage of births was registered in Diber county with 16.1%, Korca with 1.3% and Kukës by 0.4%.

The lowest number of deaths for the first quarter of 2019 is recorded in the Kukes district, with 134 deaths, down 11.3% compared to the first quarter 2018. The highest number of deaths for the first quarter 2019, recorded in the Tirana district, with 1,423 deaths, down 4.9%, compared to the first quarter of 2018.

Of the 12 districts in the country, 11 of them experienced a decline in the number of deaths in the first quarter of 2019 compared to the first quarter of 2018. The largest decline in deaths during this period is recorded by Kukes Region, with 11.3 % and the Elbasan district, with 10.6%. The percentage increase in deaths was recorded in the Berat region by 0.3%.
