She may be the oldest woman in the world to give birth to two twin daughters yesterday.
Erramatti Mangayamma was born in Guntur city, Andhra Pradesh, Indian state. According to the Times of India, the woman was able to conceive a pregnancy through IVF, and gave birth to twin girls through caesarean section.
The Times reported that Mangayamma had been married to her husband for 57 years but could not get pregnant. She told the Times that her inability to conceive a baby made her feel isolated from her peers, but her husband stood by her "like a rock" and firm until the end of the life they would have a child together. "We're the happiest couple on earth today," her husband said after the girls were born. "We have our children," he continued.
According to the Daily Mail, her age has yet to be verified, though doctors have claimed she has already broken the world record because she is thought to be 74 years old. Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara, a woman from El Puerto de Santa Maria in Spain, currently holds the record for the oldest confirmed person after giving birth to twin cesarean boys in 2006 at the age of 66.
Omkari Panwar from the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh claimed the title after giving birth to a child in 2008 at the age of 72, but she was unable to bring a birth certificate to verify her age. Despite the fact that Mangayamma had already experienced menopause, she was able to bring her twin daughters to life. It was unclear whether Mangayamma had used her frozen eggs before or if she used a donor. According to the Times, some doctors have expressed concern that Mangayamma was too old to do the procedure and say doctors should not have considered her case. "We have followed all the rules," the couple's IVF specialist told San Drkakayala Umasankar. Mangayamma was able to conceive children as early as the first round of treatment.
"Both mother and baby are very good and this is a medical miracle," say doctors at the hospital where the 74-year-old Indian gave birth to her twins.
