December 31st is a worldwide celebration. Everyone celebrates the arrival of a new year, which is expected with fireworks, celebration and midnight kisses, a tradition in many countries around the world. But what distinguishes Albania from other countries? Albanians have some traditions that distinguish them from others.
Cleaning the house with foundation
A few days before the New Year, Albanians take root jobs clearing everything from curtains, rugs to armchairs. Even if something is clean, it will be cleaned again! These are known as the "New Year's Eve" and become the next year to find the house clean and tidy.
The table is full of food and the turkey should not lack
In Albanian families, it is very important that night to have the table full. There should be no lack of different types of foods, sweets, drinks and much, much more meat. The New Year should find the table full. Ah, never forget the turkey.
Constant Dollars
New Year's Eve is the night of toast. The word "cheerful" is heard more often than any other word.
Lek pie
Another Albanian tradition is to cook the pie with a lek inside. Whoever leks is the person who will have the most luck in the coming year.
Characteristic sweetness, baklava
The typical New Year's dessert is without a doubt baklava and there is no quadrant of any other dessert that can take its place. Baklava is prepared many days in advance and all guests come home.
Congratulation messages
On the 31st all day, but more so at dinner, congratulatory messages are never missing. Even before, they were so widespread that the phone lines were blocked and the message could be delivered the next day.
Who will come home first on the morning of January 1st?
It is important that a small child, preferably a boy, enters the house first. Likewise, he who enters first must enter with his right foot to bring forth the most prosperity.
