Antarctica recorded the highest temperature, 18.3 degrees C, surpassing the previous record by 0.8 degrees Celsius. The highest record ever recorded was 17.5C in March 2015.

The Antarctic Peninsula is one of the fastest warming places on Earth, with about 3 degrees in the last 50 years, according to the World Meteorology Organization.

Professor James Renwick, climate scientist at Victoria University in Wellington, Australia, said a committee would meet to discuss the new census in Esperanza.

"Of course the record does not need to be checked, but waiting for these checks is still impressive as it is only five years since the previous record was set and it is almost a degree higher. It's a sign of the warming going on here, at a rate faster than the world average. Having a new record so soon is surprising, but who knows how long it will take? It probably won't last at all, "said James Renwick.

Scientists have warned that if this situation lasts, it will raise the sea level to 3 meters. The frozen continent will not look white anymore, but with pieces of ice that shrink from year to year.
