Police say a nurse at a New York City hospital is facing charges of stealing a credit card from a former Covid-19 patient, whom the patient's daughter says was used for gasoline and groceries.

Danielle Conti, 43, is accused of stealing two Anthony Catapano credit cards while hospitalized at the University of Staten Island with coronavirus, according to the New York Police Department.

Catapano, 70, was hospitalized on April 4 by coronavirus, his daughter, Tara Catapano, told CNN. He was aware when the alleged theft occurred and later, died April 12 from the complications of the virus.

â?? I was in shock and couldnâ??t believe it ,â? Tara Catapano said. " Of course, I knew he had to be a hospital employee because visitors weren't allowed ."

Tara Catapano, who had paid her father's bills after her mother passed away in 2014, said she did not normally follow her father's expenses closely.

However, after he died, Tara received a notice that the credit card had been used for gasoline, for which she said her father always paid in cash. He then saw that the charging date was April 9, when the father was "in the hospital, fighting for his life."

Tara Catapano said police showed footage of the surveillance by a ShopRite, where it appeared Conti was paying for groceries using her father's card.

â?? They make the oath to protect, not to harm ,â? Tara Catapano said.

Countless other items include his father's glasses, cell phone, wallet money, phone chargers and photos. It is not clear what happened to these items and it is not certain if they were intentionally stolen.

In a statement to CNN, Christian Preston, director of public affairs for Staten Island University Hospital, said Conti, who has worked at the hospital since 2007, "has been temporarily suspended and is facing charges against the crime". He also said the hospital was "working with law enforcement authorities and the hospital is conducting its own investigations."

Attempts to contact him were unsuccessful. It is not clear if she has a lawyer.

A NYPD spokesman told CNN that Conti had been issued an order to appear in Staten Island Criminal Court in September.

Tara Catapano told CNN she just wants to know why Conti did what she allegedly did.

â?? I would like to know why she took advantage of my father while she was on her deathbed, â? she said. " And I'd like to know how it would feel if someone did that to a man they loved, be it a parent or a grandfather. I don't think people who do these things think that way."

â?? But heâ??s my dad, heâ??s a person ,â? Tara Catapano said. " Instead of caring for him ... he stole from him ."
