Angelina Jolie has spoken openly about the death of her mother Marcheline Bertrand. She died in 2007 after losing her battle with ovarian cancer at the age of 56.

Angelina wrote: "I lost my mother in my thirties. When I go back to that time, I see how much her death changed me. It was not unexpected. Losing a warm and gentle love and hug from a mother is like taking you away. someone a protective layer. �

The Maleficent star, who is a mother of six, also wrote about how her life was affected by the separation of mother from father, actor Jon Voight.

"Her dreams of being an actress faded as she found herself, at the age of 26, raising two children with a former celebrity who would create a shadow in her life."

After her mother's death, Angelina had a small "W" tattoo, which referred to the song Rolling Stones 'Winter', which was sung to Angelina when she was a child by her mother.

"As I lost my mother, I saw that my life had taken a different direction. And it hurt me more than I imagined it would."
