US President Donald Trump has reacted to the shocking event, where a 49-year-old man of color was macabrely killed by a Minneapolis police officer, putting his knee on his neck, until the moment he breathed his last.
Trump said the event should never have taken place, but in the meantime called for an end to the violence by protesters who have been marching in the squares for days, clashing with police and setting fire to buildings.
From Florida where he saw the launch of the two NASA astronauts' journey through SPACE X, he said: The death of Geoge Floyd on the streets of Minneapolis was a serious tragedy. It should never have happened. He has filled Americans with anger, with grief.
Trump said he had spoken to Floyd's family and expressed the nation's grief over George's loss. But George Floyd's brother, Philonise Floyd, later told the media that the conversation was too short and that Trump did not give him a chance to speak.
Trump also said his administration had launched a civil rights investigation into Floyd's death, and added that he had asked the Justice Department to speed up the investigation.
"What we are seeing now on the streets of our cities has nothing to do with justice or peace. Those who make excuses or justify violence are not helping the fallen, but causing new pain," Trump said, adding: "My administration it will stop the violence of crowds. It does not serve the interests of justice or any citizen of any race, color, or belief that the government is subject to anarchy, abandon police areas, or allow communities to burn. It will not happen. . "
The riots and clashes with the police have activated the National Guard, for the first time since World War II.
Police officer who killed 49-year-old Derek Chauvin was arrested on Friday. He is already charged with third-degree murder.
