Last year women were further withdrawn from running the business, reducing the weight from owning active enterprises.
According to official INSTAT data in the statistical register of enterprises, last year 37 thousand 300 enterprises were run by women with a decrease of 2.2 percent compared to 2018. During 2019 it is reported that 25.4% of active enterprises were run by women, by 25.7% at the end of 2018.
In the last two years, running a business has become a difficult task for women. Approximately one in four businesses is run by one woman in 2019, but two years ago in 2017, according to the Economic Enterprise Register, 29.7% of enterprises were run by women, or nearly a third of enterprises.
The number of businesses run by women has decreased in all regions of the country except Lezha and Tirana, in which women maintain almost the same positions in the management of businesses as in 2018. In 10 other regions from South to North businesses that run by women have shrunk.
The Municipality of Tirana and the Municipality of Kamza have the highest percentage of leading women, respectively with 33.6% and 33.4% of the total active enterprises in the municipality.
The districts of Berat, Fier and Korça have the lowest share of women entrepreneurs in active business.
Commercial activity marks the highest participation of women in decision-making, with 37.4%. Tirana Region also has the highest concentration of women-led enterprises, with 32.4%.
Enterprises run by women are mainly enterprises with 1-4 employees, which account for 90.5% of the total number of enterprises run by women.
However, women run 21.3% of enterprises with 50 or more employees.
