The new 10 thousand lek banknote, the largest denomination of money issued so far, will be put into circulation in the last quarter of this year, announced the sources in the Bank of Albania.

Last year, the Bank of Albania started presenting a series of banknotes. The new series has 6 cuts, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, 5000 and the new cut 10000 Lekë.

The 200 lekë and 5000 lekë banknotes were put into circulation starting from September 30, 2019, while this year the 10,000 lekë and 1,000 lekë banknotes will be put into circulation starting the last quarter of the year.

The 2,000 lek banknote will be put into circulation starting from the end of 2021 and the 500 lek banknote will be put into circulation starting from 2022.

The 10,000 lek banknote that appears on the market for the first time has not yet been presented as an image by the Bank of Albania, but according to the decision of the Supervisory Council, this banknote will reflect the figure of the famous Albanian poet, Asdren, combined with figurative symbols. ' The 'National Flag', as well as a string chosen by the 'National Anthem', 'About the United Flag / with a Desire' of a purpose '.

According to the Bank of Albania, banknotes contain a number of security elements that protect them from counterfeiting and maintain public confidence in money.

Improving the banknote series in order to strengthen security elements and at the same time improve the design is a well-known practice in central banks, which is generally applied every 15-20 years.

All denominations of the current series of Albanian banknotes and coins, except the 2000 Lekë, were approved in 1995 and released in 1996. Meanwhile, in 2008, the 2000 Lekë banknote was added to the series and at the end of 2011 the exchange rate ended. legal for 100 Lekë banknote.

Also, in these 20 years there have been constant changes in technology, both in terms of security elements that can be distinguished from the general public without the use of special machines, as well as in terms of those known by processing machinery. and banknote counting.

Existing banknotes of all denominations will continue to circulate in parallel with new banknotes. They will continue to have a legal course and serve as a means of payment.

The Bank of Albania will notify the public in a timely manner on the dates when each of the existing 200, 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000 lek denominations will no longer have a legal exchange rate. However, even after losing the legal course, existing banknotes will retain their value and can be exchanged with new ones for the same value.
