Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has become the hero of the moment, after helping to rescue two women who were in danger on a beach called Algarve in Portugal. The 71-year-old president was filmed on Saturday swimming near a kayak overturned in the water and women struggling to turn it around and climb it.
President Rebelo de Sousa is currently on holiday in the Algarve, trying to promote tourism there. Portugal's economy relies on the tourism industry, which has been heavily affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The president had just spoken to reporters at Praia do Alvor beach when he noticed women asking for help.
The videos that went viral in the protagonist media and recently in the world media, show the moment when the president swam towards them to save them. Also, two other men had approached to manage the situation, one by swimming and the other by jet skiing.
Seen by all beachgoers as a hero, President Rebelo de Sousa told reporters that the women had come from another beach and were pulled by the current.
"There is a very large western current. They were pulled out of the current, turned upside down, swallowed a lot of water. They were not even able to turn the kayak, nor climb on it or swim. Such is the force of the current," he said. he told the media who were there at the time of the incident.
The president warned women to be more careful in the future.
