A wise saying goes that time is gold. But did you know that most of the time Albanian women spend on housework, cooking, caring for children or the elderly.

Albanian women have much less time to take care of themselves, engage in sports, cultural events or entertainment compared to men. While compared to EU countries and the region, the gender equality index in terms of time is lower in the country…

The Gender Equality Index in the Time Zone for Albania is 48.1. According to the sub-areas, it is noticed that in the sub-area of â??â??care activities there is a slightly higher value of the index than in the sub-area of â??â??social activities. INSTAT explains in the Gender Equality report that Time Zone is related to paid work and unpaid work at home and caring for children and other family members, as well as the ratio of work to leisure.

There is a significant difference between men and women in Albania in terms of the percentage of people who say they care for their children or grandchildren, the elderly or people with disabilities every day, with respectively 51.1 percent of women and 24.6 percent of men.

When it comes to cooking and daily household chores, this activity accounts for 87.8 percent for women and only 16.1 percent for men.

On the other hand, women spend less time on sports, cultural or recreational activities outside the home every day or several times a week - 31.4 percent in the case of women and 43.9 percent in the case of men.

Among women, 5.4 percent are involved in volunteering or charity activities at least once a month, while in the case of men, 3.4 percent are those who engage in such activities.

How do we compare to the EU

The result of the index for Albania in the field of time is lower than the EU-28 average by 17.6 points. In the EU, there are on average a smaller number of people caring for children or other family members on a daily basis than in Albania (37.5 percent of women and 24.7 percent of men), marking a still significant gender gap. .

The gender difference is much more pronounced in the EU than in Albania in terms of cooking and housework, where 78.7 percent of women do this activity every day, while in the case of men it is 33.7 percent. In terms of sports, cultural and other recreational activities daily or several times a week, women and men are in smaller numbers in the EU than in Albania (27.5 percent of women and 31.9 percent of men), marked here also a significant gender difference in favor of men.

On the other hand, among women and men in the EU, there is a higher percentage of people involved in volunteering or charity activities at least once a month (12.2 percent of women and 11.4 percent of men).

Compared to the EU Member States and the two EU candidate countries, Albania is ranked 27/31 based on the value of the index in the field of time. It is positioned between Serbia and Portugal and above Slovakia, Greece and Bulgaria.
