Anglo-French actor Michael Lonsdale, who played James Bond opponent Roger Moore in the 1979 film Moonraker, has died at the age of 89.
In the film, he played Hugo Drax, an industrialist who planned to poison all people on Earth and then repopulate the planet from his space station. This was just one of more than 200 roles he played in English and French over a career that spanned six decades.
In an interview with Mi6 HQ in 2012, Lonsdale was asked if he had been concerned that playing a negative character in Bond might have negatively impacted his career.

Lonsdale had a diverse career in film, TV, radio and stage. Before starring in Bond, he played Deputy Commissioner Claude Lebel in the 1973 political thriller The Day of the Jackal. He later appeared as Jean-Pierre in the 1998 American action film Ronin, alongside Robert De Niro, and as Pope in Steven Spielberg's 2005 historical thriller Munich.
