A 67-year-old woman in Michigan returned home this week after 196 days in hospital after being infected with Covid-19. This is one of the longest periods a patient has stayed during the pandemic.
"It changed my whole life," Deanna Hair told NBC News. "The whole process from the moment of infection, staying in the hospital, being in the ventilator and recovering, seemed to be exhausting my powers."
Deanna and her husband, Ken Hair, from Ann Arbor, reported symptoms after returning from California in mid-March. Both tested positive, but while her husband had mild symptoms, Deanna had a fever, cough, and vomiting.
After being hospitalized, Deanna was also diagnosed with a colon problem. According to doctors at the 'Michigan Medicine' hospital, at the moment when after infection with Covid-19 you have severe symptoms, you may develop large blood clots. Deanna also suffered from numerous chest infections and had quite a few kidney problems.
"We thought she was going to die. We were called three times from the hospital to say goodbye, each time believing it was the last, but she struggled." - says her son.
In September she began rehabilitation. During all this time lying in bed, Deanna lost muscle strength and had difficulty making even basic human movements. After 196 days she was able to get out of the hospital in a wheelchair.
Also Deanna, as the man who has spent the longest time in the hospital after being infected with Covid-19, said a message to all people via NBC News:
"It was very difficult, but what kept me alive was the support of my family. Covid-19 is a deadly virus. Do not avoid precautions. Wear a mask, wash your hands and maintain social distance. Take care of yourself and those you love. "
