When visitors enter the Pantheon in Rome and encounter its colossal dome, they can experience the same feeling as its visitors almost 2000 years ago. "Anyone who enters the Pantheon immediately feels the overwhelming weight of human history, but also the incredible ease of human creativity," said John Ochsendorf, professor of architecture at MIT and former director of the American Academy in Rome.

You come into this magnificent space, look up, see the sky or a passing cloud. And you think, 'How could they have done that almost two millennia ago?'

Pantheon- means "all gods". Although it is commonly thought that the structure was a place of worship dedicated to Roman deities, its original purpose is actually unknown. With few references to it in ancient texts, historians have left it somewhat obscure.

Legend has it that this is exactly where the founder of Rome, Romulus, ascended to heaven. Others believe that the Pantheon was the place where the Roman emperor could communicate with the gods. Whatever the case, like many Roman architectural deeds, the imposing structure was a display of power, an "important symbol of imperial power," said Luca Mercuri, the current director of the Pantheon.

Although the Pantheon has revealed some of its design secrets, it still finds magic in the details. It is one of the few places in the world where you can actually see the Earth spinning.
