With the assistance of Supreme Court Justice John Roberts, Joe Biden was sworn in a few minutes ago in Washington, officially being elected the 46th President of the United States of America.

In his oath, he said to the Americans:  "I solemnly swear that I will faithfully fulfill my duty as President of the United States and best preserve and uphold the Constitution of the United States."

Biden, 78, is the oldest American president to take office. He won the November 3, 2020 presidential election against incumbent President Donald Trump. Congress approved of his victory on January 6th.

Prior to taking office, Joe Biden delivered a message of unity, especially the need for unity to meet the challenges posed by the pandemic that claimed the lives of 400,000 people in the United States and caused much economic hardship.

The inauguration ceremony of President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris was also attended by two singers Lady Gaga, who sang the American anthem, and Jennifer Lopez.

Biden said they should "start work immediately" after the oath, because " we have no second to lose when it comes to dealing with the crises we face as a nation ."
