A collection of handwritten notes, letters and postcards of Princess Diana have been sold at auction in the UK for a staggering 82 82,000 (about $ 113,000). The letters, all sent to family friend Roger Bramble, were written between 1990 and 1997 and spent 24 years hidden in a closet at the Bramble family home.
As the letters touch on some of the most difficult aspects of Diana's life, including her divorce from Prince Charles, the struggle with mental health, and the media pressure she faced, they also reveal her funny, entertaining personality.
In a statement, the Bramble family said: "We have been concerned about the contemporary portrayals of Diana that can be made in the minds of the public. We believe these letters reveal that she has been a loving, cultured and wonderful human being and that wider publication can only give greater merit to their author. "
In a letter to Roger Bramble dated October 19, 1995, Diana jokingly referred to the Queen as the "Boss" - and that may be why she was sold for ,7 8,700 (about $ 12,000). Thanking Bramble (then Westminster High Sheriff Lord) for lunch at London's restaurant, Bibendum, she apologizes for delaying her for a meeting with the Queen.
"I only hope that your arrival at Westminster Abbey was before the (Queen) Chief and if not, I look forward to being mentioned in the excuses," Diana wrote.
An August 1996 note in which Diana thanks Bramble for a lunch that distracted her from her divorce from Prince Charles has sold at auction for ,8 7,800 (about $ 11,000).
In another, of 1992, the princess reflects on the "terrible week" following the publication of Andrew Morton's biography of her. The paper sold for 1, 1,350 (about $ 2,000).
A Christmas postcard, containing a picture of Diana, Prince William and Prince Harry, was also included in the collection.
Diana fans from the UK and US gave numerous bids for the letters, according to Mimi Connell of Auction David Lay.
"People just love Diana, she was extremely popular," Connell said, according to Tatler. "You learn a lot more about her as a person by reading these letters. You see her character, her personality and her intelligence."
Proceeds from the auction will be shared between the four cultural organizations with which Diana was associated: the English National Ballet, the Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra, the Rara Opera and the International Endowment Benesh Fund.
