A hospital employee in Italy did not go to work for 15 years, but continued to receive a full salary. The unusual news was announced by the local media.

The man allegedly did not go to work at Ciaccio Hospital, in the southern city of Catanzaro, since 2005. He is said to have been paid a total of 538,000 euros during the years he has not worked.

The Italian news agency Ansa has reported that he is now being investigated for fraud, extortion and abuse of office. Also, 6 managers in the hospital are being investigated in relation to this issue.

The arrests are the result of a lengthy police investigation into alleged absences and fraud in the Italian public sector. The employee was a civil servant and was assigned to a hospital job in 2005. Police said that at that very moment, he stopped going to work.

The man is accused of threatening his manager not to file a disciplinary report against him. Later, when the manager retired, the persistent absence of this employee was never noticed by her successor or by human resources.
