A 15.81 carat gemstone, dubbed "The Sakura", sold for $ 29.3 million in Hong Kong becoming the most expensive pink-purple diamond ever sold at auction.

This diamond, which takes its name from the Japanese word for cherry blossom, is the largest diamond of its kind sold at auction, according to Christie, the auction house that sold it.

The stone is set in a simple platinum ring and any stain is visible only under magnification. It is very rare for pink diamonds to be classified as impeccable, as they usually contain "many grains".

It is also classified as "vibrant", as only 4% of pink diamonds have this intense color.

In 2017, a 59.6 carat pink diamond sold for a record $ 71.2 million, at Sotheby’s Hong Kong. The diamond, which was bought by Hong Kong jewelers Chow Tai Fook, was dubbed the "CTF Pink Star" and remains the most expensive flawless diamond of any color sold at auction.
