Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie are expecting their second child. This news was given by Carrie herself.

In an Instagram post, Carrie Johnson also said she had undergone an abortion earlier this year.

She wrote: "Waiting for our 'rainbow' baby this Christmas."

"At the beginning of the year, I had an abortion that left me heartbroken. I feel extremely blessed to be pregnant again, but I also have a bag of emotions."

Johnson added: "Fertility issues can be really difficult for a lot of people, especially when on platforms like Instagram it can seem like everything is going well.

"I have found a real comfort to hear from people who have also experienced loss, so I hope that in a very small way sharing this can help others as well."

A "rainbow baby" is a baby born after an abortion.

The prime minister, 57, married Carrie Johnson, 33, in a small ceremony at Westminster Cathedral in May.

In April 2020, she gave birth to her and Boris's first child, a boy who was christened Wilfred.
