Cretan Greece was shaken by a magnitude 6.4 earthquake, with the epicenter east of the island. The quake was recorded at 12:24 local time.

Several buildings were damaged, but no casualties have been reported so far.

The tremors were felt on some of the Dodecanese islands, according to the Athens National Observatory.

Crete was hit last month by a 5.8 magnitude earthquake, which killed one person and caused damage.

Local media report that the small church of Agios Nikolaos, in Sitia, was destroyed by the latest tremor.

The strong shock was followed by several earthquakes of smaller magnitude.
