American actor James Michael Tyler, who is best known for his role as Gunther in the series Friends, has passed away at the age of 59.

"Tyler passed away peacefully at his home in Los Angeles on Sunday morning," said a statement from his manager.

"If you met him once, you made him a lifelong friend," she added. "He has left behind his wife, Jennifer Carno, the love of his life."

Tyler was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2018, which later spread to his bones.

"Wanting to help as many people as possible, he boldly told his story and conducted an awareness campaign for people with prostate," said his manager.

James is known as Gunther, the waiter and manager at the series cafe, Central Perk.

He was in love with Jennifer Aniston's character, Rachel, throughout the series, who also worked there as a waitress in the early seasons of the show.
