South Korean actress Park So Dam, who became very famous thanks to her role in the Oscar-winning film, "Parasite", has been diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer.

The 30-year-old actress was diagnosed during a health check-up and underwent surgery, her agency, ArtistCompany, said in a statement to CNN.

Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common type of thyroid cancer, according to the National Health Service (NHS). It normally affects people under 40, especially women, and tends to be easier to treat than other types of thyroid cancer, the NHS says.

Park's disease has disrupted plans to promote her upcoming film, "Special Delivery."

"The company would like to thank once again all the people for their support of 'Special Delivery' and actress Park So Dam, as well as the actors and crew of 'Special Delivery' overcoming this difficult time together," the ArtistCompany agency said, adding that she will do her best to help the actress recover.

Park appeared in a number of South Korean movies and TV series, including "The Priests" (2015) and "The Silenced" (2015), but her famous performance came in the 2019 global hit "Parasite."

The film, directed by Bong Joon Ho, became the first non-English film and the first South Korean film to win the Academy Awards Best Picture in February 2020.
