Procter & Gamble has withdrawn more than 30 hair care products with aerosol spray, including many dry shampoos and dry conditioners, warning that the products may contain benzene, a cancer-causing agent.

The affected items include various Pantene products, Herbal Essences, Hair Food, Old Spice and Aussie products, according to Friday's announcement, which is P&G's second in a month. A complete list of withdrawn products is available on the company's website , including product code numbers.

P&G said in a statement that the affected products are unlikely to expose people to benzene levels so high as to cause health problems. However, the company noted that it "has not received any reports of adverse events" but is continuing with the withdrawal.

"Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally and through the skin, and can result in cancers, including leukemia and bone marrow cancer, and blood disorders that can be life-threatening," the statement said. .

Retailers have been told to remove withdrawn products from the shelves.

P&G added that no other products from those lines are "part of this attraction and other such products may continue to be used, including those spray products such as aerosol dry shampoos, with production codes different from those communicated in a specific way".

In November, P&G withdrew more than a dozen Old Spice and Secret deodorants and aerosol sprays, warning that the products may also contain benzene. In July, Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) withdrew several sunscreens Neutrogena and Aveeno after detecting low levels of carcinogen in the products.
