Melomakaronas are traditional Greek biscuits with nuts and honey, which are prepared especially on the occasion of the Christmas holiday. If you want a lunch or a dinner with elements from Greek cuisine, these types of cookies should not be missing.

For about 25 cookies:

300 gr flour

120 gr butter at room temperature

75 gr powdered sugar

160 ml of best quality olive oil

2 teaspoons cinnamon

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 cup (water) grated walnuts

1/2 teaspoon powdered cloves

1 tablespoon cognac

The juice of an orange peel

For the syrup:

6 tablespoons honey

1 glass of water

1 cup sugar

1 tablespoon lemon juice 

Preparation:

In a deep bowl, with the help of a mixer, beat the butter, olive oil and powdered sugar until the mass takes on a light color. Add the orange juice, clove powder, cinnamon and cognac while continuing to mix for a few more seconds. Add the flour and baking powder, mixing the whole mass by hand until it becomes homogeneous. Take small pieces of dough giving them shape (oval or circular) and place one after the other in a pan lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven at 1800 C for 20-30 minutes (until the biscuits have taken on a golden color.

Preparation of the syrup:

In a deep saucepan or pan pour the water, sugar, honey and lemon juice. Stir the mixture over low heat for about 10 minutes.

In a small bowl combine the mass with finely chopped nuts, a little butter, cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of the above syrup. Once the biscuits have cooled, insert them into the syrups by two or three with the help of a perforated spoon. Leave for a few seconds and pull out immediately sprinkling with nuts. Place on a plate until completely cooled.
