A remote town in Antarctica, it is very hospitable to everyone, but to live there there is only one condition: you must have removed the appendicitis. This also applies to children who go to live on the island of Villas Las Estrellas, a small island, part of the frozen continent, where in summer it is reported that up to 150 people live, while in winter only 80.
The city, which is also a research base, located on the island of "King George", is officially part of the Chilean territory in Antarctica. It is just one of two civilian settlements out there where people can live for months, maybe even years, according to the BBC.
In most cases, the residents are scientists or military personnel, but those who stay there for long periods also take their family members with them. Before landing on the island, everyone must have performed the simple operation.
In the city there are only a few residential buildings, a post office, a small school, a bank and a shop for various equipment and food. The obligation to remove the appendix comes from the fact that there is no hospital on the island, the nearest one is more than 1000 kilometers away, from the northernmost point of the island. Consequently, it would be fatal for anyone who would urgently need surgery, to escape. The limited opportunities for health care have made the female inhabitants of the island recommended not to become pregnant while staying there.
Temperatures on the island reach -37 degrees Celsius and for this in winter, everyone stays indoors, as they risk freezing. Therefore the island is more populated during the summer, when temperatures reach up to -2 degrees Celsius.
