Anne Heche has passed away after a serious car accident last week. The actress was 53 years old.

"We have lost a bright light, a kind and cheerful soul, a loving mother and a loyal friend. Anne will be greatly missed, but she lives on through her beautiful sons, her iconic work and her passionate works," Heche's rep told Page Six. "Her courage to always stand on the side of truth , spreading its message of love and acceptance, will continue to have a lasting impact."

Earlier today, Heche's team said she was officially declared brain dead, but doctors were keeping her heart alive so it could be determined whether she was eligible for organ donation, a wish that Heche had always expressed it.

Heche had fallen into a coma shortly after the accident and was in critical condition.

Heche is survived by 20-year-old son Homer Laffoon, who she has with ex-husband Coleman Laffoon. She is also the mother of a 13-year-old son, Atlas Heche Tupper, who she has with James Tupper.

In addition, Heche was known for a 3-year romance with Ellen DeGeneres.
