Google and Meta have been fined billions of dollars by South Korea for privacy violations. Seoul accuses the companies of not informing users that they would use their information.

In a statement, the Commission for the Protection of Personal Information said that Google has been fined $50 million and Meta $30.8 million. Neither Google nor Meta have yet reacted to this Seoul decision.

The privacy panel said the companies did not clearly inform service users and did not obtain prior consent when collecting and analyzing behavioral information to highlight their interests or use it for personalized advertising.

South Korea said these firms also did not inform users that they would use the extracted information for personalized advertising.
