AKU today asked consumers not to consume the 'Wudy' product, announcing the presence of a bacterium harmful to human health, known as Listeria monocytogenes STI55.

What is Listeria monocytogenes STI55 bacteria?

Listeriosis is an illness caused by eating raw, frozen, and ready-to-eat foods that have been contaminated with a bacterium called Listeria monocytogenes, or simply Listeria.

Listeriosis is rare but can cause severe symptoms, even death, in highly susceptible groups. In healthy adults, Listeria can cause a flu-like illness. It can cause serious illness in the elderly, pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborn babies and people with a damaged or weakened immune system.

How can I be exposed to this infection?

Listeria is widespread and can poison many foods. Of greater concern are foods that do not require further cooking or reheating, such as frozen ready-to-eat foods.

How do I know that I have been infected with Listeriosis?

Infection in healthy adults is usually asymptomatic, or presents as a flu-like illness. However, in certain people, including the elderly, pregnant women and their unborn babies, newborn babies and people with weakened immune systems, it can cause serious illness and even death. A person who has been affected by Listeria infection may have symptoms such as: high fever, chills and headache. It happens that the symptoms are mild, so the presence of the infection is not understood. If you are concerned about symptoms or illness, please consult your family doctor.

How can infection be prevented?

You can reduce your risk of getting the infection by eating fresh, freshly cooked or prepared foods, and by avoiding foods that may have Listeria. Also follow the following steps:

Cleaning: Wash all fruits, vegetables and salads thoroughly before eating.
Cooking: Cook the food well and serve it while it is still hot. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions when preparing all types of food.
Freezing: Make sure the temperature of your refrigerator is 5°C or below. Put frozen foods in the refrigerator immediately.
Control: Put expired food in the trash, and, if the food package has been opened, consume it within two days.
Separation: Cooked foods and raw foods should be kept separate from each other.
