The coronation of King Charles III was set for May 6.

After a wait of over 70 years, the new King will not be crowned until late next spring. The Royal Palace has finally revealed the official date when King Charles III will be crowned. Saturday, May 6, 2023 is the official date when the ceremony will take place in Westminster Abbey, London.

The King's wife, Camilla Parker Boëles, now Camilla, will also be crowned Queen Consort during the ceremony.

The coronation follows the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest-serving monarch, aged 96, on September 8. The Queen's funeral was held on September 19. Charles holds the record for the longest wait for an heir, over 70 years.

The coronation is more of a ceremonial than an official occasion. Charles immediately became king after his mother's death. The length of time before the ceremony is not usual. Queen Elizabeth II's coronation took place 16 months after the death of her father, King George VI.

Westminster Abbey has hosted every English royal coronation since 1066.
