Angelina Jolie will step down from her role as special envoy to the UN refugee agency UNHCR after 20 years of campaigning in support of forcibly displaced people worldwide.

Jolie, in a joint statement with unhcr, said he wanted to address a broader group of humanitarian and human rights issues.

"After 20 years working within the UN system, I feel it is time for me to work differently, engaging directly with refugees and local organisations and supporting their avocation for solutions," Jolie said as he seeks to work beyond UNHCR's orbit.

Filippo Grandi, the head of UNHCR, expressed his gratitude for Jolie's decades of service and commitment, stressing that it made a difference to refugees and displaced people.

Angelina Jolie, one of Hollywood's most iconic actresses, has conducted more than 60 missions for unhcr, ensuring she attracts media attention for the problems facing refugees.
