While two strong earthquakes in Kahramanmara? caused great destruction in 11 provinces, eyes turned to a possible earthquake in Istanbul, right after the disaster in which more than 45 thousand people lost their lives.
Taking part in a television program, the Director of the Earthquake Research Institute of the Kandilli Observatory, Prof. Dr. Do?an Kalafat said:
"What we can do is only statistical studies. There is a 64 percent probability by 2030, a 75 percent probability by 2050 and a 95 percent probability by 2090 that an earthquake of similar magnitude could also strike Istanbul".
According to Kalafat, speaking to Haber Global, within seven years there will be an earthquake of magnitude above 7 in Istanbul with a probability of 64 percent.
