This summer, temperatures in Greece are expected to reach 50 degrees. Professor of Geology and Natural Disaster Management, Efthymios Lekkas spoke about climate change and the dire scenario of extreme temperatures.
Speaking about Mega, the professor said that the Eastern Mediterranean is the most sensitive region to all these phenomena. A temperature of 48°C in Athens would be absolutely dangerous for human life, according to scientists.
As "Ta Nea" writes, the increase in mercury, prolonged periods of drought and heavy floods due to rapid rainfall constitute the extreme conditions of the future. But what would happen in Athens if the maximum value reaches 48 or 49°C on a summer day, as predicted by the scenario.
"This is a completely extreme temperature that exceeds any scenario, since in Athens the maximum value we recorded is 44.8°C. A temperature of 48°C is definitely dangerous to human life, especially if it lasts too long. These temperatures are a threat to people's lives," says Lekkas.
The World Meteorological Organization has long sounded the alarm: if climate change continues, Greece's future will resemble Africa's.
