Today was coronation day and as King Charles III and Camilla were officially crowned at Westminster Abbey, the network couldn't help but comment:

King Charles' 'sausage fingers'.

The King's fingers are very swollen and he himself has previously joked about the appearance of his hands.

He mocked himself by calling his fingers "sausage fingers" in a letter to a friend.

On this historic day, 'sausage fingers' are trending again. But what is the real reason Charles' fingers are so swollen?

GP Chun Tang, Medical Director at Pall Mall Medical in Manchester told MailOnline that there could be many "reasons a person might suffer from sausage toes".

"Swollen toes are often a symptom of water retention that can be caused by a number of health conditions. Sausage fingers are officially known as dactylitis.

"This condition arises due to inflammation and can be the result of arthritis, multiple bacterial infections or even TB.

Tang also mentioned that high salt levels (which causes water retention and therefore swelling of the fingers), allergic reactions, medical side effects, injuries and autoimmune diseases may also be contributing reasons for the size of Charles' fingers.

“Treatment for this condition can be determined when the underlying cause is identified. A blood test should be done to determine the underlying issues," he said.
