Tony Bennett, the American singer with a career spanning seven decades, has died at the age of 96.

Bennett, the American pop and jazz singer, is best known for his 1962 song I Left My Heart in San Francisco.

He won 19 Grammy Awards and has sold more than 50 million records worldwide.

Tony was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2016. He tweeted: "Life is a gift - even with Alzheimer's." It was found that while his cognitive function was impaired, he was still able to sing a whole range of his repertoire.

Born Anthony Dominick Benedetto in 1926 to Italian immigrants, Bennett had a poor childhood. His father died when he was 10 years old. As a teenager he became a singing waiter, earning money for the family before enrolling to study music and painting at the New York School of Industrial Art.
