In 2025, the prices of Hermès' iconic Birkin and Kelly bags have increased significantly, sparking much discussion in the fashion world and beyond. These bags, known for their exclusivity and quality, have become the subject of debate due to pricing policies and limited access.

Price increase

According to a report by PurseBlog, the prices of Hermès bags in the US have increased by an average of 6-7% in 2025. For example, the price of a 25 cm Birkin bag in Togo leather has increased from $11,400 to $12,100, while the 25 cm Kelly bag in Epsom leather has gone from $11,800 to $12,600.

In Europe, price increases have been more moderate, around 4%, making buying in the European market more attractive to international consumers.

Legal and ethical debates

In 2024, Hermès faced a class action lawsuit in the US, where consumers accused the company of unfair trade practices. According to the lawsuit, customers were forced to buy other Hermès products in order to be able to buy a Birkin bag, a practice that was considered a violation of antitrust laws.

The "Wirkin" phenomenon

Meanwhile, a more affordable alternative has hit the market: the "Wirkin" bag sold by Walmart for around $78-$100. The bag, which closely resembles the original Birkin, has sparked debate about the value of luxury and the impact of similar products on the fashion market.

The price hikes and ensuing debates demonstrate the complexity of the luxury market and the challenges brands like Hermès face in maintaining exclusivity and coping with competition.
