For many people, finding a definition for contemporary art can be very difficult. Although its title is simple and straightforward, the meaning of contemporary art in modern times is not cut and dried. Fortunately, we can fully understand what “contemporary” is by looking at the history of the concept and exploring the themes associated with it.
In its most basic sense, the term “contemporary art” refers to art – painting, sculpture, photography, installation, performance and video art – that is being produced today. Although seemingly simple, the details surrounding this definition are often a bit hazy, as different people’s interpretations of what is considered “today” can vary widely. Consequently, the exact starting point of the genre is still debatable. However, many art historians consider the late 1960s or early 1970s (the end of modern art, or modernism) to be a suitable estimate.
