What I am interested in is related to inner beauty and outer beauty. But is it possible to separate inner beauty from outer beauty? By that, I mean something exceptionally beautiful, universally so. That is very difficult to find or to achieve. Perhaps you can give some examples of it. It is rare to find something that is beautiful to anyone, without a prior package of information accompanying it. Often, it tends to be an external element that becomes understandable only after being mediated by information.
When we talk about beauty – and there’s no denying that there have been many experiments on this – faces are often used as the subject of study. One of the most popular (and, in my opinion, most boring) experiments is the one that claims that beauty is related to symmetry. But, in fact, that’s not the case. There’s something much more interesting going on. In one experiment, people were shown half of different faces.
Then, they had to rank them from most to least beautiful. After being exposed to the full faces, they found exact matches to their previous rankings – but it had nothing to do with symmetry. In fact, this girl had an asymmetrical face, where both sides were supposed to be beautiful, but if you look closely, you'll see that they're very different from each other.
As a designer, I couldn't help but be tempted to intervene. So I broke the face into separate parts and tried to figure out which individual elements were beautiful to me. I allowed myself to feel, and I felt pleasure – and that this face was beautiful. When I looked at the eye, I didn't immediately go to the eyebrow or other parts. I don't know exactly how it works, but these elements led me to an emotional experience from which my feeling stemmed.
As I pointed out, I'm not a neuroscientist, but understanding how to put different elements together into one — so that when you look at it, you feel it and not just think about it — leads me to another very important issue:
We do not see things as they are, but as we ourselves are.
