Today I want to talk to you about Debussy's most famous piano piece and one of the most famous piano pieces in musical literature, 'Clair de Luna'. It has been composed for all kinds of combinations and has been used in so many different ways, but it remains one of the masterpieces for the piano. Its title 'Clair de Luna' is quite evocative, so I won't go into it, because I'm sure each of you has your own way of looking at the moon and getting a different inspiration from it. I want to show you how I think about how to learn to listen to music - if you want to, even without being a musician, if you know what to listen for. It starts in a very simple way (1:28). Kind of simple... now let me tell you what this piece starts with (2:29). Listen, now comes the tension. Put your ear to my left hand. And then it continues…a little more elaborate…and later in this section we have a tense chord (4:03). If you train your ear to hear the differences when the same music comes along you will benefit greatly from it.
