The brain is the most complex and mysterious organ in our body. It weighs only about 1.4 kilograms, but it controls everything from breathing and emotions to memories and dreams. Scientists have not yet fully discovered it, but what we do know is enough to amaze us. Here are some facts that show why the brain is a universe in itself.

The brain, a living supercomputer

The human brain processes about 11 million bits of information per second, although we are only aware of a small fraction of it. This is because most processes are automatic – like heartbeat, digestion, or instinctive reactions – leaving room for the conscious mind to deal with decisions, memories, and dreams.

Why do dreams seem so real?

During sleep, the brain enters the REM phase, where electrical activity is almost the same as during the day. This is why dreams seem so vivid to us. To the brain, there is no difference between a memory, a thought, or a dream; they all activate similar networks of neurons. That's why you often wake up feeling as if you really experienced what you dreamed.

The brain never gets tired like muscles

Although we often feel mentally tired, the brain itself does not feel “tired” in the physical sense. It continues to work nonstop – day and night – generating enough energy to light a small electric bulb. What makes us tired is the excessive consumption of concentration and stress, not the activity of the brain itself.

Memory – an endless archive

The brain has the theoretical capacity to store up to a million gigabytes of information. However, memory is not a fixed archive, but a dynamic process: every time we remember something, the brain “recreates” that memory, sometimes changing it slightly. This is why our memories are not always accurate, but often colored by emotions.

Neurons – the network of internal stars

The brain contains about 86 billion neurons, connected by trillions of synapses. If these connections were stretched out end to end, they would span the Earth several times. This incredible network is why every thought, emotion, or idea is unique.

An organ that surprises us every day

The brain is still full of secrets. It is the generator of dreams, the architect of memories, and the conductor of the entire body. Every new fact we discover about it reminds us that, despite the advances of science, this organ remains the most mysterious universe we hold within ourselves.
