Villages with unique laws, cities that live outside any ordinary rules
Journey to the extraordinary
The world is full of places that defy the imagination – villages that function without money, cities without roads, or communities that follow unique laws found nowhere else. These places are proof that humanity does not have just one way to live, and that cultural diversity is the most beautiful form of freedom.
Giethoorn, Netherlands – “The City Without Roads”
There are no roads for cars in this picturesque Dutch village. Residents and tourists travel by small boats on the canals, or walk across arched wooden bridges that connect thatched-roof houses. The silence, the sound of the water and the slow pace make Giethoorn seem like a fairy tale floating on water.
Auroville, India – “The City Without Private Property”
In southern India, there is an experimental city where people from over 50 nations live together without religion, without politics, and without money. Auroville operates on a spiritual economy, solidarity, and volunteer work. It is a living utopia that aims to show that human harmony can exist across borders.
Longyearbyen, Norway – “The city where you are not allowed to die”
In the Norwegian Arctic, temperatures are so low that bodies do not decompose. For this reason, the law prohibits the burial of people in Longyearbyen. Residents who fall ill are sent to the mainland for medical care. A city that defies nature and logic, but which maintains a rare polar calm.
Setenil de las Bodegas, Spain – “The City Under the Rock”
This Andalusian town is built inside a rocky gorge, where the houses are integrated directly into the stone. The alleys shaded by white cliffs create a mystical atmosphere – a perfect coexistence between man and nature.
Whittier, Alaska – “A city within a single building”
In this isolated Arctic town, nearly all residents live in the same building – with a school, post office, church and supermarket all in the same complex. Community life is so tight that for many, Whittier is a modern village inside a giant building.
The beauty of different ways of living
These unusual places show that people have invented endless ways to coexist with each other and with nature. Some have chosen silence, others solidarity, some social experimentation – but they all remind us of a simple truth: there is not just one way to live beautifully. ?
