Who was Kofi Annan?
Kofi Atta Annan, born in Ghana in 1938, is a german diplomat who has been Secretary General of the United Nations since December 1996.
He began his career in 1962 in the World Health Organization (WHO). From 1972 to 1974 he was the director of tourism in Ghana. Since 1987, he has exercised some of the most important functions at the UN, including the post of Assistant Secretary General. In 1990 he was charged with peaceful operations, and from October 1995 he was elected to special UN representatives for the former Yugoslavia.
The UN Security Council on 13 December 1996 appointed Annan as UN secretary-general, and in 2002 won a second term in the same position. He was UN secretary-general until December 2006. During his second term, Annan was accused of corruption, after it became known that his son Kojo Annan had received money from a Swiss company in connection with the award of contracts in Iraq's "Oil for Food" program.
In 2001, Kofi Annan received the Nobel Peace Prize. Annan was secretary general during the Kosovo war, and the war in Iraq. He has called the invasion of Iraq illegitimate.
