The Bank of Albania has issued today the new denominations of 500 Lekë and 2000 Lekë banknotes.
These banknotes come with a refreshed design but retain the same motifs presented in the respective existing denominations. They reflect changes related to the overall configuration of the added and improved elements of banknote design and security.
The 500 Lekë banknote has the portrait of Ismail Qemali on the front, with the eagle symbol and the pen with which the act of independence was signed. At the back is the building where the declaration of independence took place, the telegraph with which the news of the declaration of independence was spread and the room where the decision was made.

The 2000 Lekë banknote has the portrait of King Ghent, the last ruler of the Illyrian state, on the front. At the back there are elements of Illyrian antiquity architecture, as well as the medicinal plant Gentiana Lutea.

The new banknotes will be used as means of payment, along with existing banknotes of all denominations, which will continue to circulate and have legal tender as before. In the official announcement, the Bank of Albania encourages the users to be responsible and careful in handling every banknote they hold in their hand, in order to maintain their longevity, quality and integrity.
