Japan, Singapore and South Korea have the most powerful passports as the world continues to recover from Covid-19, overturning the pre-pandemic ranking that was dominated by European countries.
A Japanese passport offers entry to 193 countries, one more than those from Singapore and South Korea, according to the latest Passport Index (Q3 2022) by Henley & Partners, a global citizenship advisory firm based in London.
After three Asian countries, a large number of European countries lead the top 10 list.
Germany and Spain have access to 190 destinations, followed by Finland, Italy and Luxembourg with 189.
In fifth place with 188 destinations are Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden, while France, Ireland, Portugal and the United Kingdom are in 6th place (187).
New Zealand and the United States are ranked seventh, alongside Belgium, Norway and Switzerland.
Due to the invasion of Ukraine, Russian passport holders are more cut off from the rest of the world than ever before.
The index does not take into account temporary restrictions or airspace closures, so the Russian passport currently ranks 50th in the index, with entry access to 119 destinations, but in reality Russian citizens are effectively barred from entering many of those destinations.
China ranks 67th with access to 80 countries, while Indian passport holders now have similar freedom of travel to what they enjoyed before the pandemic, the report says, with unrestricted access to 57 destinations worldwide (compared to just 23 destinations in 2020 ).
Afghanistan's passport ranks as the weakest, with its holders able to travel to only 27 countries.
However, Asia's more cautious response to Covid-19 means that citizens currently have less opportunity to use travel freedoms than people in Europe or the United States.
